QEH/EastLink 21-Hour Equipment Drive - May 29-30, 2010

Staff and volunteers of this year's QEH/EastLink 21-Hour Equipment Drive soak up thrill of over half a million total
The QEH/EastLink 21-Hour Equipment Drive celebrated another successful intiative live from the EastLink studios in Stratford.
More than $524,798 was raised, which will directly support ambulatory care medical equipment. It will go to assist current services at the QEH and this equipment will then be transferred to the new Ambulatory Care Centre when it opens in early 2012. This year's total was approximately $16,852 above last year's total of $507,946.
Allan Morse, Chair of the QEH Foundation, said this accomplishment was due to the generosity of Islanders. "There is nothing more important than our health and we are so pleased to be able to provide our hospital with the funds that are very much needed."
Ambulatory care service is when patients have schedules out-patient appointments and return home following their visit. With this new equipment, QEH health care professionals can continue to provide quality care to Islanders. Examples of medical equipment includes: 2 Hematology Analyzers (Laboratory), Flexible Naso Pharyngoscope (ENT), Digital Fundus Camera (Ophthalmology), Indirect Laser Attachment (Ophthalmology), Bronchoscope/Processor/Cart (Endoscopy), Video Laryngoscope (Cardio-Respiratory), EMG Bed/Table (Cardio-Respiratory) and wheelchairs (General & for stroke care).
Morse says this event is like a family reunion every year. "We have so many people helping out each and every year. There are volunteers providing their time, entertainers sharing their talents, and many others working behind the scenes. Representatives from many groups and organizations were on-hand to present their cheque from events held throughout the year."
Co-Chairs for the second year in a row were Earl Power and John MacLean of the Parkdale-Sherwood Lions Club. "We want to thank everyone who helped on the weekend and especially those who made donations. Every hour, we heard the total amount rise, and as that total grew - it really added to the excitement," said Power. "It was a first-rate show and a great weekend for our hospital."
For the fourteenth year in a row, Marlene MacDonald was back at the anchor desk for the entire weekend. Helping Marlene on the anchor desk were approximately forty co-hosts from across the Island. Vern Murphy was on the floor conducting interviews with patients and community leaders.
Bruce MacLean, Regional Manager, PEI with EastLink TV, said EastLink was pleased to once again join forces with the QEH Foundation in producing this worth-while event. "This was on of the most successful telethons yet. We are proud to be associated with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation and helping with its efforts to improve ambulatory care services on the Island."
A highlight was Chuck & Albert's laugh-out-loud hospital shenanigans. All weekend, they wandered throughout the hospital and were able, in a poking-fun way, to showcase various medical equipment and services at the hospital.
