QEH/Eastlink Telethon aims to complete funding for a new CT Scanner – May 23, 2019

CHARLOTTETOWN – “With the support of Islanders, it’s our hope to have all funding in place for a new CT Scanner for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital this weekend,” says Ed Lawlor, QEH Foundation Board Chair. “It has been our primary focus the past several months and with our 23rd annual QEH/Eastlink Telethon taking place, we are confident we can reach this goal.”

The QEH/Eastlink Telethon will broadcast live on Eastlink Community TV 10/610 beginning Saturday, May 25 from 12 to 9 pm and will continue on Sunday, May 26 from 9 am until 6 pm.

“$1.1 million was raised through our annual Friends for Life Campaign and we know Islanders will help us meet our target of $1.5 million for the purchase of a new CT scanner,” says Lawlor.  “It’s such a vital piece of diagnostic equipment for the QEH and used in practically every aspect of medicine, particularly as it relates to cancer, stroke and major trauma patients.”

Additional funding during Telethon will also support priority medical equipment for cancer treatment, nursing units, and many areas throughout the hospital.

“We are featuring several inspirational stories about Island families who received care as well as many in-depth hospital interviews with QEH specialists and staff as they profile medical equipment and services throughout the hospital,” says Lawlor.

New this year, the Telethon will feature a songwriters’ circle hosted by singer-songwriter Kelley Mooney, who will welcome P.E.I. artists Catherine MacLellan, Nick Doneff and Logan Richard. This will air live, from the Eastlink Community TV studio, on Saturday, May 25 between 5 to 6 pm.

Kelley Mooney is also one of the grateful patients featured throughout the Telethon. She will share her health care story, which ultimately resulted in calling the QEH ‘home’ for nine weeks in 2013, following ileostomy surgery. “I simply can’t say enough about the care I received at the QEH,” says Mooney. “We are fortunate to have a hospital so well-equipped with life-saving medical equipment and a team of caring staff, right here in our back yard.”

The Royal North will bring their high energy to the Telethon, as the opening act on Saturday at noon. Throughout the weekend other featured P.E.I. artists volunteering their time and talent will include Rachel Beck; Tip Er Back; Fiddlers’ Sons; the Mount Stewart School Choir; FallBack; Treble with Girls; Tony ‘Doc’ Landry; Jacinta MacDonald; Kendall Docherty and the Ceilidh in the City Band, Lawrence Maxwell, Tim Chaisson, and many more.

Since the beginning, Eastlink Community TV has been providing the Telethon production and broadcast, as well as arranging the entertainment. “We take great pride in 23 years of partnership with the QEH Foundation and our ability to bring fresh ideas to the entertainment component of the telethon including broadcasting the finest local talent on the Island,” says Bruce MacLean, Manager, Eastlink Community TV Programming for P.E.I

The QEH/Eastlink Telethon is a time to reflect on the importance of investing in the QEH, for the health of our Island family, friends, communities and visitors.  Everyone is encouraged to tune in and call to pledge support. To make your gift online at any time, please visit
